New Dimensions of the magicJack Plus 2014

Although very similar in size to the previous model of the magicJack Plus, the New magicJack Plus 2014 is slightly larger, and slightly heavier.  The extra weight is likely due to the device’s enhanced hardware that optimizes its capabilities to function as a stand-alone unit.  The device features 2 USB ports, Internet and phone ports (same as the previous model), and a micro SDIO port.  This SDIO port, which stands for Secure Digital Input Output, has been found on many types of electronic devices for several years.  Although there are numerous functions of the SDIO port, an SDIO port allows devices to interface to Wi-Fi.  Although the New magicJack 2014 is lacking Wi-Fi capability, the presence of the SDIO port indicates that the company likely has big plans to incorporate the capability into the company’s services in the near future.

Upgrades Found in the magicJack Plus 2014

Enhanced Sound Quality

Thanks to the innovation of an even better High Definition Voice technology, users of the magicJack Plus 2014 can expect to have even better sound quality than before.  Many have said that the New device provides the highest sound quality of any home or business VoIP device, and much better sound quality than what has traditionally been provided by standard home telephones.

Take Your Phone Number Anywhere

With the multiple functionalities of the New magicJack Plus 2014, users can take their home number with them wherever they go.  They no longer have to worry about making sure their calls are forwarded to a mobile phone, hotel, or relative’s home. If you own a business this means you can bring your business VoIP line anywhere in the world. By plugging the magicJack Plus 2014 device into their computer, they will have the ability to make and receive phone calls from anywhere.  This feature is ideal for individuals who travel frequently, as they can continue business as usual from hotels, their friends’ and family members’ homes, or even Europe.

 No Computer Required

The hardware that has been installed on the New magicJack Plus 2014 allows it to act as a completely stand-alone unit.  Rather than having to keep a computer turned on all the time, the device no longer requires a constant connection to a computer.  However, users should know that the registration of the device requires at least temporary access to an Internet connection.  However, the registration of the device can be accomplished with a tablet, smartphone, Blackberry, Windows Phone or any other electronic device that can connect to the Internet including the iPad and iPhone.

Plug the magicJack Plus 2014 Into the Wall

The New magic Jack Plus 2014 can now plug directly into the wall, rather than into a modem, router, or computer.  This helps make the device easier than ever to access and set up.

Setting Up the magicJack Plus 2014

The new magicJack Plus 2014 is easier to set up than any other VoIP device that has been released.  There are just a few simple steps to follow, which can usually be accomplished in the matter of just a few minutes.  In fact, after the cables have been plugged into their appropriate ports, the longest part of the process is the registration of the device.  Steps for Setup for the device include:

  1. Plug the included Ethernet cord into the magicJack Plus 2014 unit into the Internet port.
  2. Plug the magicJack Plus 2014 unit into a power supply (when using it independently from a computer or router)
  3. Plug your phone’s cord into the magicJack Plus 2014 device, and into a standard home telephone.  The magicJack Plus 2014 will work with a corded, or a cordless telephone.
  4. Register the device on the company’s registration website at

*Note: Registering the device as an Upgrade may cause the previous magicJack Plus unit to deactivate, while also causing users to lose any call time that they may have previously paid for.  As a result, many beta testers recommend setting up the device as a “New Account.”

How Much Does the magicJack Plus 2014 Cost?

Much like previous models of the magicJack device, the New magicJack 2014 device will cost consumers about $59.99 initially. This includes the 2014 magicJack Plus Unit, a USB connector for use with a computer, an Ethernet cable, and a power cord.  This cost also includes the first 6 months of service.  After the 6 month period ends, the magicJack Plus 2014 service will cost consumers $29.95 per year.  However, as with previous models, VocalTec allows consumers to purchase five years in advance for a cost of only $19.95 per year. This is once again the lowest cost of any full service home or business VoIP device in the world.

Overview of the Ooma Telo VoIP Phone Adapter

The Ooma Telo VoIP phone adapter is a Voice Over Internet Protocol telephone service provider that allows users to make and receive free phone calls anywhere within the United States (and at an additional cost, Canada as well).  Ooma provides consumers with a high quality home telephone service at a fraction of the cost of a traditional landline telephone service provider.  Over the course of just a few months, users who switch from home telephone service providers to Ooma have the opportunity to get great deals and save hundreds of dollars.  The Ooma Telo phone adapter allows users to have a smart phone for their home phone.  While the magicJack Plus 2014 provides users with phone service with an annual payment, Ooma provides a new level of convenience, providing users with phone service with a one-time payment.

Ooma Telo

Features of Ooma Phone Service

Much like the magicJack Plus 2014 (and Vonage), the Ooma Telo provides users with many of the same features that home phone service providers have provided to their customers.  These features are included with the cost of the device:

  • Free Mobile Minutes: Ooma Premier customers who use the Ooma Mobile iPhone App (more information to follow) with 250 minutes of US calling each month.

How Ooma Works

Ooma works in the same way as many other VoIP telephone service providers, by using a customer’s existing high speed internet connection to make and receive phone calls.  Rather than utilizing the older technology of telephone wires, Ooma uses newer technology found in DSL lines, cable lines, and the same technology used in by high speed internet service providers (ISPs).

Despite the utilization of the newer technology, the Ooma Telo allows users to connect just about any standard home telephone for VoIP phone service.  Corded, and cordless phones will all work with the Ooma Telo VoIP phone adapter.  Additionally, users can make calls to Ooma or non-Ooma customers.  Similarly, Ooma as well as non-Ooma customers can call Ooma customers.

Voice Quality

The technology that is utilized by Ooma allows it provide some of the highest quality sound available through any other VoIP (or landline) telephone service provider.  Its Ooma PureVoice HD technology delivers a crisp acoustic performance that is especially clear and vibrant when calling from Ooma to Ooma, or over other HD network.  This technology uses an advanced voice compression algorithm that helps reduce Ooma’s bandwidth consumption by 60% compared to similar VoIP devices, including magicJack Plus, netTalk, Vonage, and others.

The Ooma HD Voice Technology also doubles the fidelity of phone calls by allowing the device to capture more speech information than a standard telephone call (including landlines).  This sound quality is maximized when the two callers are using Ooma handsets.

How to Register and Setup Ooma Telo

Getting the Ooma Telo registered and completely set up is designed to take customers about fifteen minutes.

  1. Activate the Ooma telephone services online.  This includes either registering the Basic Ooma telephone service, or upgrading to the Ooma Premier telephone service. All of this can be done quickly and easily via the “Ooma Login” page on their website.
  2. Plug the Ooma Telo into a high speed modem or router.
  3. Plug a standard home telephone into the Ooma Telo unit.
  4. Begin making and receiving high speed telephone calls anywhere in the United States (or Canada with Premier service).

Ease of Use

The Ooma Telo features a touch-sensitive keypad that provides Ooma customers with one-touch access to Voicemail and other frequently used features.  The device also features a USB port that supports Wi-Fi capable devices, as well as Bluetooth devices (including the Ooma Bluetooth adapter that allows users to make hands-free calls).  This USB port will also allow for future expansion opportunities that the company may implement.  The Telo unit also features a built-in speaker that allows users to screen calls prior to answering.  This feature of the Ooma is one that it does not share with the magicJack Plus 2014, which operates independently of an interactive module.

The cost of the Ooma Telo is $149.99, which includes a 30 Day , no questions asked return policy.  This one-time purchase allows users to make and receive phone calls.  The only additional cost that customers will incur are taxes and fees, which vary between regions. User can also purchased a reburbished Ooma Telo or the old Ooma Hub and Scout devices for much less.

For an additional cost of $9.99 per month, customers can upgrade from Ooma Basic to Ooma Premier.  This includes a free number transfer, a Bluetooth adapter, a wireless adapter, and an extended warranty.  As mentioned earlier, the Ooma Premier service also allows users to make calls to the United States and Canada.

Ooma Mobile App

The Ooma Mobile HD App allows users to make domestic and international calls from iOS devices, including the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch over a Wi-Fi network or 3G or 4G network.  Once the user is logged into the App, they have access to many of the same features that users of the magicJack App have access to, including contacts, listen to voicemail, and change Ooma preferences.  The Ooma App allows users to use Ooma, instead of their existing mobile minutes, to make calls.  The App can be downloaded for free from the App Store.

Ooma Mobile App

Ooma for Small Business

magicJack plus 2014 Vonage

Vonage vs. magicJack Plus VoIP Home Phone Service

With so many efforts by so many people across the United States to try to save money, many people are discovering that one of the easiest ways to save money is by switching their home or business phone service from a standard telephone service provider, to one of the many VoIP phone service providers.  VoIP telephone service providers not only provide a phone service that is much less costly, allowing customers to save hundreds, or even thousands of dollars per year, but they also provide a phone service that is extremely easy to use and set up.

Two of the largest VoIP telephone service providers include magicJack and Vonage.  Each of these two companies provides their customers with the opportunity to get a reliable, inexpensive home and (in the case of Vonage) business phone service for a fraction of the cost of a traditional landline.  For consumers who are interested in which phone service will best meet their needs, we have outlined a few of the primary characteristics of the Vonage telephone services in the following paragraphs.

Vonage Logo

Much like the features provided by the magicJack Plus 2014, Vonage provides customers with a number of different features that are provided by standard home telephone service providers, as well as many features that are not provided by landline phone service providers.  Some of these features include:

  • Caller ID
  • Call Waiting
  • 3-Way Calling
  • Call Forwarding
  • Anonymous Call Block
  • Vonage Visual Voicemail: allows users to get their voicemail as a text, voice, or Email.
  • Other features that are only applicable to VoIP phone service providers:
  • No need for a computer
  • Keep your phone number
  • SimulRing: allows Vonage customers to receive phone calls on up to five different phones at the same time (including office, home, or mobile devices).
  • Compatible with fax machines (for $9.99 per month)
  • Phone call quality comparable to that of landline phone service providers, as well as mobile phone service providers
  • Phone service can be used from a mobile device: The Vonage Extensions App, like the magicJack app, is available for free download, allows Vonage customers to use their existing call plan to make and receive calls from their mobile device, using a Wi-Fi, 3G, or 4G connection. This easy-to-use App allows you to import or export your existing contacts, making it one of the most convenient VoIP mobile apps yet.

Vonage App

The Vonage Extensions App is available with a variety of different mobile devices, including iOS devices like iPhone, as well as Android devices, and Blackberry

Make and receive calls during a power or internet outage: Unlike many other Voice Over Internet Protocol telephone service providers, Vonage customers can still make and receive calls even if their internet is out.  In order to do this, customers must first set up a Network availability number when they sign up.  During a power outage, calls will be forwarded to the mobile device number or landline that has been provided.  This is one feature that sets Vonage apart from many other VoIP phone service providers, which will often leave customers unable to make and receive calls during any type of internet outage.

How Vonage Works

Vonage and magicJack provide phone service to their customers in a very similar manner.  These companies, as well as other VoIP phone service providers, let users make and receive phone calls by using an existing high-speed internet connection.  The Vonage box can connect to the user’s existing internet connection in several ways, including through a high-speed wireless router, DSL, or cable modem.  Users of Vonage and magicJack alike will be able to browse the internet as they make phone calls.

Getting the Vonage VoIP phone service started is very easy.  First, consumers should sign up for a Vonage calling plan.  After that, customers will receive a Vonage Box, Ethernet cable, power cord, and a Quick Start Guide in the mail.  Currently, Vonage require a United States billing and shipping address for registering.

The Vonage Box is a VoIP phone adapter that is capable of connecting up to two lines through the user’s pre-existing high-speed cable or DSL internet connection.  The small and portable device has been designed to work with cordless, or corded phones, and it comes with a VoIP networking router.  This Vonage Box is available with an Instant Rebate for free, otherwise it costs $79.99.

Vonage Box

The Vonage Quick Start Guide comes with several easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions, which have been included below:

  1. Plug the Vonage Box into an existing high-speed internet connection via a wireless router, DSL, or cable modem
  2. Plug the home phone into the Vonage Box
  3. Pick up the phone, and begin calling friends and family.  Calls can also be received to the same telephone number immediately.

Ease of Use

The only requirement for Vonage, magicJack, and many other VoIP phone services is the availability of a high-speed internet connection, as well as a touch-tone phone.  Each of these two VoIP phone service providers make their devices extremely easy to set up, so users can begin making and receiving calls through their internet connection in the matter of just a few minutes.

Although these devices are designed to be extremely easy to set up, Vonage actually provides its customers with professional installers with more difficult installations, such as getting all of the phone jacks in a particular home to work with Vonage.

*This cost can be reduced if users choose to purchase 5 years of service in advance.

**This varies from the basic plans of $9.99 per month to $39.99 per month.

magicJack plus 2014 netTALK

magicJack Plus vs netTALK DUO VoIP

With millions of people across North America trying to find new ways to save money, phone service is one arena in which many people are learning that they can save thousands of dollars per year by switching to an alternative form of home phone service.  Voice Over Internet Protocol phone services (more frequently referred to as VoIP phone services) are now providing consumers with ways to make and receive high quality phone calls at a very low cost by using their existing high-speed internet connection.  These services are provided without the need for monthly phone bills or contracts.

MagicJack WiFi Update: Now To Be Called 2014 MagicJack Plus

Although there has been very little news recently from VocalTec about their newest product, the magicJack WiFi, the company will be releasing the product in the very near future and with a new name, now to be called the 2014 magicJack Plus.

With previous new models of the Magic Jack products, including the original and magicJack Plus, the anticipated release date has typically been well prior to its actual release date.  With a previously anticipated release date within the first quarter the 2013, it is more likely that the device will be released by the beginning of the third quarter of this year and end up very different than initially expected.

This is expected to be one of the most complex and sophisticated pieces of VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) technology that has ever been released, which could be part of the reason why the product has experienced such a long delay in its release.  The magicJack plus 2014 features are expected to make it much more useful for home use, but it is also expected to be much more practical than previous devices for small business owners as well.  Increased power of the device will allow it to more easily handle increased telephones.  In fact, the device is expected to be able to allow for connection to dozens of telephones without any issues.

Although there are many other companies that provide VoIP phone services to their customers for a relatively low cost, the combination of the extraordinarily low cost and the exceptionally high call quality has made the Magic Jack devices the best devices on the market today.  Other companies may be able to provide low cost OR high call quality, but very few can match the combination of these two features that have been provided by Magic Jack.  This trend is more than likely to continue with the newest product and their continued offering of their free magicJack app.

Because of this potential for application in commercial industries, business owners are likely to flock to the device.  If the new 2014 magicJack plus has costs to consumers that are anywhere near where costs have previously been, small business owners can expect to save thousands of dollars each year on their phone plans.  This can help increase the profits of the business, and help encourage growth within the company, which is something that most small business owners have been struggling with over the last few years.

We will continue to follow any and all updates from VocalTec Communications about the release of the new device, and will keep our followers updated as well.  For those who are interested in hearing more about other products being released from VocalTec, sign up for the Newsletter in the bottom right corner of this page.  We will be sure to update all of those on the mailing list about any and all developments with regard to the release of any new products.
